SCIPAD - BIG IDEAS - BOOK 2
BASIS OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS
19. A scientist claimed to have discovered a new element which he named “Silverbackium”.
Silverbackium is a hard, shiny, malleable material, and seems to be a typical metal.
(a) Give two other properties, apart from those mentioned, which silverbackium would
be expected to have.
(i)
(ii)
(b) Silverbackium reacts with nitric acid to give a steady stream of gas bubbles.
(i) Name the gas likely to be formed when silverbackium reacts with nitric
acid.
(ii) Name a test to identify this gas, and the result you would expect.
Test:
Result:
(iii) The name of the substance remaining in solution after the reaction between
silverbackium and nitric acid is
(c) The scientist leaves some of the silverbackium on a bench in his lab. After a few
days he notices that it is starting to corrode.
(i) Name the gas responsible for corroding the metal.
(ii) Outline one method the scientist could use to prevent the silverbackium
from corroding.
(d) Silverbackium carbonate is a blue solid. When added to sulfuric acid a reaction
takes place and a gas is given off.
(i) Name the gas which has been given off by this reaction.
(ii) Name a test to identify this gas, with the result you would expect.
