Meet the Metals
Each element of the Periodic Table has a distinctive look, feel and colour. They also have unique
melting and boiling points. We call these the physical properties of an element. By testing elements
for their physical properties, we can separate them into two groups: metals and non-metals.

Thermal Conductivity
1. Your teacher will help you complete the diagram above by summarising the properties of
metals.
2. (a) Are all metals solid at room temperature? 
(b) If you answered ‘no’ to (a), state which metal is not solid. 
3. Are metals found on the left or right-hand side of the Periodic Table? 
4. Using a Periodic Table:
(a) Identify the metal element with the smallest mass number. 
(b) Which metal has 20 protons in its nucleus? 
(c) Name the metal that used to be called “Wolfram”. 
(d) Name the metal that used to be called “Natrium”. 
(e) Name the following metals: (i) Fe 
			 (ii) Pb 
			 (iii) Mg
