The Genetics of Freckles
Some people are more likely to get freckles than others, depending
on their genes and skin type. The main gene responsible for freckles
is called MC1R. It comes in two different versions: freckle (F) and
non-freckle (f). Both FF and Ff people have freckles. Anyone with at
least one copy of the freckle allele (F) will have freckles.
The pedigree chart below shows the inheritance of freckles in a
family.
