FUELS AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Possible Effects of Global Warming on New Zealand
Weather patterns
Global warming may lead to dramatic
changes in regional and seasonal weather
patterns. This may lead to more intense and
more frequent storm events such as tropical
cyclones.
Disease
Higher temperatures and rainfall may mean
tropical pests and diseases are able to
survive and reproduce in New Zealand.
Sea-level Rise
Rising sea levels could flood coastal towns
and communities. New Zealand’s ports
would be swamped. Coastal railway routes
and roads would be flooded.
Agriculture
Changes in climate may effect the viability
of crops in some areas. Crops that are
typically grown only in the North Island may
be able to be grown in the South Island.
Rainfall
More frequent and intense rainfall is
expected to increase the likelihood of
flooding, as well as flash-flooding.
