Comparing Complete and Incomplete Combustion
Aim: To compare the amount of energy released by complete and incomplete
combustion.
Equipment: Bunsen burner, tripod, gauze, 100 mL measuring cylinder, 2 x 250 mL beakers,
stopwatch, thermometer, heatproof mat.
Method: 1. Set up your tripod and gauze mat on a heatproof mat.
2. Add 100 mL of tap water to both beakers.
3. Place one beaker on the gauze mat and record the temperature of the water.
4. Ignite your Bunsen burner and leave the air hole closed.
5. Place the Bunsen burner underneath the tripod and start the stopwatch.
6. Record the temperature every 10 seconds until the water reaches 80 °C.
7. Repeat the investigation, but this time with the air hole open.
