BASIS OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS
Writing Chemical Equations: Metal + Acid
When a metal reacts with an acid, a metal salt and hydrogen gas are produced. The type of
salt produced depends on the type of metal and the type of acid used. The following table
summarises the types of salt that can be produced by the three common laboratory acids.
Acid Salt formed
Sulfuric acid Sulfate salts
Hydrochloric acid Chloride salts
Nitric acid Nitrate salts
If magnesium metal reacts with sulfuric acid, it will produce magnesium sulfate and hydrogen gas,
or as a word equation:
Magnesium + sulfuric acid magnesium sulfate + hydrogen
