Observing the Effects of Acid Rain
Acid rain makes chemical weathering happen more quickly. Buildings and statues made from
rock are damaged as a result. This is worse when the rock is limestone (CaCO3). Oamaru Stone is
New Zealand’s most important building stone and is a very pure limestone. It is soft enough to be
readily sawn and worked by hand. Unfortunately, because it is mostly CaCO3, it is very susceptible
to the effects of acid rain.
Designing an experiment to show the effects of acid rain on limestone
Design an experiment to show the effects of acid rain on limestone. Get your teacher to check
your method, then carry it out to see what happens.
