SCIPAD - BIG IDEAS - BOOK 2
LIFE OF MICROBES
Fungi
Fungi are a group of organisms that include mushrooms, moulds and yeasts. They feed by secreting
enzymes out of their hyphae onto their food. These enzymes break down the food before the
nutrients are absorbed into the fungi. This type of digestion means fungi can often spoil food
or causes disease if they are growing on living tissue. Fungi grow best in warm, moist conditions
where a source of a nutrition (food) is available.
Anatomy of a Fungi (Bread Mould)

2. Use the diagram to describe how fungi reproduce.

3. Fungi digest food outside of their body. Briefly describe how they do this.

4. Describe three conditions required for fungi growth.

Hyphae
Thread-like structures that
extend through whatever the
fungus is feeding on.
Sporangiophore
Lift sporangium to
increase exposure to
wind, water and animals.
