SCIPAD - BIG IDEAS - BOOK 2
THE BASIS OF HEREDITY
Floppy Eared Rabbits
In rabbits, assume a single gene controls the orientation of their ears. The allele for
upright ears (E) is dominant to the allele for floppy ears (e).
1. State the possible pairs of alleles of:
(a) A rabbit with upright ears.
(b) A rabbit with floppy ears.
(c) A rabbit that is purebred for floppy ears.
2. (a) Complete the Punnett square to show the possible offspring
produced when a rabbit with floppy ears mates with a rabbit that is not purebred
for upright ears.
		 Alleles for floppy eared parent:
		 Alleles for upright eared parent:
(b) If the rabbits had 8 offspring, state the expected number of:
		 Floppy eared rabbits:
		 Upright eared rabbits:
3. Use a Punnett square to show how two rabbits with upright ears could produce offspring
with floppy ears (circle the combination of alleles that produces a floppy eared rabbit).
