SCIPAD - BIG IDEAS - BOOK 2
FORCES AND MOTION
6. (a) Suggest what would happen to the total weight force if a bucket of water was
placed on top of the sciPAD.
(b) Explain how the support force would respond to the change in weight force.
Now consider the effect of someone pushing the book from the right.
7. Suggest what would happen to the book if:
(a) The push force was greater than the friction force.
(b) The push force was equal to the friction force.
8. When the book is pushed, are the weight force and the support force still present?
9. Based on your answer to 8, complete the diagram below showing the forces present on a
block of wood being pushed across the table from right to left.
In your diagram you should:
•
Use arrows to show the relative size of the forces by using arrows of various lengths.
•
Label the arrows with the names of the various forces.
•
Ensure your arrows are in contact with the object.
Friction between the book and the table resists the
push force. This is called the friction force.
The person is exerting a force on the book towards
the left. This force can be called the push force.
The size of the arrows can be used to show
the relative SIZE of the forces
