1. When two bar magnets are placed close together they will distort the field lines around
each other. Complete the diagram by drawing in the magnetic field lines showing the
magnets interacting with each other.

2. The Earth has a magnetic field generated by its core. Compasses point in the same
direction as Earth’s magnetic field. To make the top north, it must be imagined that the
Earth has a bar magnet inside it with a south pole at the top.
(a) Draw the magnetic field lines around the globe (make sure you use arrows to
indicate the direction of the magnetic field).
(b) Give three examples of animals that use this field to navigate.

3. Unfortunately humans aren’t born with the ability to sense Earth’s magnetic field. However,
we have invented objects that we can use to sense it for us.
(a) Name one of these sensing objects.
(b) Briefly outline how this sensing object works.
