SCIPAD - BIG IDEAS - BOOK 1
THE IMPORTANCE OF WAVES
What is a Wave?
Waves are vibrations that transfer energy as they move. Both sound and light travel as waves.
There are two different types of waves - transverse waves and longitudinal waves.
Transverse Waves
Matter travels up and down at 90° to the
direction the wave is travelling. Ripples in
water are transverse waves. Radio waves
(like the ones used by wireless devices are
also transverse waves.
Longitudinal Waves
The matter carrying a longitudinal wave moves
parallel to the direction the wave is travelling
by alternating between compressing and
stretching. Sound waves are longitudinal
waves.
