LIFE OF PLANTS
Fertilisation
Pollination is the transfer of pollen from one plant to another, whereas fertilisation is the fusion of
male and female gametes. Pollen contains the male gametes (sperm) and the ovary, at the base
of the stigma, contains the female gamete (egg cell or ova). When pollen lands on the stigma,
the sperm cells need to get to the ovary that is some distance away. In order to do this, the pollen
grain produces a pollen tube that grows down through the cells of the style and into the ovule.
1. Outline the difference between ‘fertilisation’ and ‘pollination’.
